The municipality of Cotiporã (3,853 inhabitants in 2019; 17,238 ha) is
located 160 km of Porto Alegre and 35 km of Bento Gonçalves.
Cotiporã was
established in 1892 by Venetian immigrants, as Monte Vêneto. Brazil's first
dairy cooperative, Cooperative Trabalho e Progresso, was established in Monte
Vêneto. Brazil's "father of refrigerated meal industry", A Sul Americana, was
also established in Monte Vêneto.
The town was renamed in 1939 to Cotiporã, a
Tupi-Guarani word meaning "a good place". The municipality of Cotiporã was
established by State Law No. 7,652 promulgated on 12 May 1982, separating from
Veranópolis, and inaugurated on 1 January 1983.
