The municipality of Harmonia (4,638 inhabitants in 2016; 4,458 ha) is located
70 km north of Porto Alegre.
Harmonia was established in 1854 by German
colonists on plots sold by José (Juca) Inácio Teixeira, the son of a Dutch
seaman and a Brazilian woman. The plots were designed by the land surveyor
Ernesto Mûzel. The first new colonists were Pedro Kuhn and Pedro Heck, from São
José do Hortêncio. A wooden chapel was erected in 1873, to be served by Jesuit
fathers from Tupandi.
Harmonia was elected to a district of Montenegro in
1897. The municipality of Harmonia was established by State Law No. 8,562
promulgated on 13 April 1988, following a plebiscite held on 20 September 1987.

The orange-shaped coat
of arms of Harmonia recalls that citrus production is the main source of income
for the town. The orchards cover 1,064 ha, yielding 900,000 boxes of fruit every
year.
