The municipality of Pinto Bandeira (3,003 inhabitants in 2019; 10,507 ha) is
located 140 km of Porto Alegre.
Pinto Bandeira was established in 1876 by
Italian immigrants, as Silva Pinto. Renamed to Nova Pompeia on 1 March 1902, the
place was elevated to a district of Bento Gonçalves by Municipal Act No. 4
issued on 15 January 1913. Following the ban of Italian language and abolition
of Italian names on the eve of the Second World War, the district was renamed to
Pinto Bandeira by Decree No. 7,842 issued on 30 June 1938.
The municipality
of Pinto Bandeira was established by State Law No. 10,749 promulgated on 16
April 1996 and inaugurated on 1 January 2001.
In 2003, the Federal
Supreme Court ordered the downgrading of Pinto Bandeira to the status of
district. The municipal status was re-established by the Court on 7 October
2012.
