The municipality of Quevedos (2,710 inhabitants in 2010; 54,336 ha) is
located 380 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
Quevedos is named for its
first settler, the pioneer José de Quevedo de Macedo (d. 1842), who came here
from São Paulo in 1802. In a document dated 1831, Macedo called the place Costa
de Toropi. His daughter, Josefa Quevedo, erected on 1820 a "small church", for
which the settlement was named Igrejinha, eventually renamed to Quevedos by
Decree No. 7,589 issued on 29 November 1938.
The municipality of Quevedos was
established by Municipal Law No. 9,589 promulgated on 20 March 1992 and
inaugurated on 1 January 1993.

The flag is charged with the main element of the coat of
arms, a representation of the "Quevedos' Small Church", which was most probably
erected a few years before 1852.
