The municipality of Roque Gonzales (6,847 inhabitants in 2019; 34,907 ha) is
located on the border with Argentina, here river Uruguai, 550 km north-west of
Porto Alegre.
The municipality is composed of the districts of Roque Gonzales
(seat), Dona Otília (est. by Decree-Law No. 55 issued on 29 January 1969) and
Rincão Vermelho (est. by Decree-Law No. 14 issued on 10 November 1966)
Roque Gonzales is named for the Jesuit father Roque Gonzales who established
there on 15 August 1628 the Assunção do Ijuí reduction, together with João de
Castilho. Facing the hostility of Cacique Nheçu, Roque was murdered on 15 August
1628 in Caaró; Castilho was murdered two days later on Assunção.
Accordingkly,
Roque Gonzales is nicknamed "Land of the Missions' Blood".
The district
of Roque Gonzales was established within the municipality of São Luiz Gonzaga by
Municipal Act No. 183 issued on 25 October 1927, and transferred by State Law
No. 2,519 promulgated on 15 December 1954 to the newly formed municipality of
Cerro Largo.
The municipality of Roque Gonzales was established by State Law
No. 5,134 promulgated on 7 December 1965 and inaugurated on 15 May 1966.
