Coat of Arms

Shield Gules; a stepped Gable Argent masoned Sable; in base two inescutcheons, the dexter one Gules in bend sinister, charged with a nettle leaf Argent, the sinister one Azure in bend, charged with a lion Or armed Gules.
Meaning:
The gable belongs to the local city church, the inescutcheons display the family arms of the Counts of Schaumburg at dexter and of the Welfen Dukes at sinister. The former had been local rulers until the 2nd half of the 14th century, different branches of the latter ruled the town afterwards. The town gained city rights in 1929.
The arms were approved in 1961 by district governor (Regierungspräsident) of Hannover.
