Meaning:
The Rochlitz Shire was populated by Slavic tribes in 995. It had been an appendix of the greater Chutizi Shire. It was ruled by the German kings since the times of Heinrich I. A royal castle, mentioned in 1009, was acquired by a branch of the Wettin kin in 1143. Its members ruled the area until 1210 as Counts of Rochlitz. Afterwards the castle was seat of a Saxon reeve until the 19th century. There had been a few settlements. A city was built probably in the 2nd half of the 12th century, which was walled since the 14th century. A city council was first mentioned in 1360, which held the high level cognisance since 1464. Lining weaving and brewing had been the most important business lines. Around 1500 the city council had been manorial lord of several surrounding villages, completely or partially. The arms are based on seals, which were made since 1364 and basically never changed. Since the 2nd half of the 15th century there had been arms based on the seal. The tinctures are those of the Margraviate of Meißen. The rooks (German: Roche) are canting elements.
