Vohenstrauß Coat of Arms

Shield Azure a sinister facing ostrich statant Argent armed Or with a horshoe Or in his beak, attacked by a fox salient Gules.
Meaning:
Vohenstrauß had been first mentioned as a market town between 1269 and 1280. Between 1378 and 1770 it had repeatedly been called a city, but the city rights were granted officially much later in 1912 by Prince Regent Luitpold of Bayern. The current pattern appeared first on the oldest print of the local seal from 1365. The arms are canting displaying an ostrich (German: Strauß) and a vixen (German: Vohe). Since the 5th city seal, dated 1635, the animals are displayed statant on top of a line in base called "ground". Following seals displayed the animals with and without ground as well. The tinctures are known by Johann Siebmachers new edition of his roll of arms (edited since (1856). The current arms are based on the oldest seal and had been drafted by Otto Hupp.
