Coat of arms

Description of coat of arms:
It is a so called French shield (without mural crown however). In a red field upon a green hill St.Martin, dressed blue, nimbed golden(=yellow), riding a silver(=white) horse with golden(=yellow) bridles, is sharing his white coat with a kneeling beggar. Upon the dexter chief point is a silver(=white) square divided by a black cross.
Meaning:
According to source the pattern was fixed in 1908 and the cross of the electorate of Köln was added in order to distinguish the arms from those of other cities. The choice of colours was made arbitrarily. St.Martin appears on seals of the city since 14th century.

The banner was approved by Regierungsprääsident Arnsberg on 2 October 1970. When the 600 years anniversary was celebrated, the King granted the coat of arms on 6 June 1911.
