Description of coat of arms:
Shield Azure, a rose Argent with seven petals filled, barbed Vert and seeded Or.
Meaning:
The Saxonian village, located at a crossroads, had a baptistery church since the rule of the Franconian Karolingian kin in the 9th century and became a base of Christian proselytization. It developed to a market town in the 16th century and was denoted as trading post or settlement (German: Wigbold) in the 17th century. Finally it gained city rights in 1929 by Prussian Minister of State. The rose as a symbol is known from the oldest seal of the market town from 1709. According to tradition it had been a symbol of the local guild of weavers and textile workers. The city was known for the production of fine garments until the middle of the 20th century. The tinctures were fixed in 1941 together with the approval of the arms.
