The municipality of Orellana de la Sierra (228 inhabitants in 2019; 1,670 ha) is located 150 km east of Badajoz and 40 km north-east of Villanueva de la Serena.

The flag and arms of Orellana de la Sierra, adopted on 8 March 1989 by the Municipal Council and validated on 13 December 1989 by the Royal Academy of History, are prescribed by an Order adopted on 10 January 1990 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 18 January 1990 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 6, p. 59 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:
Flag: Quartered. A white cross, the cantons in turn green and black. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.
Coat of arms: Argent a lion rampant gules four dragons issuant from the cantons. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.
The Royal Academy of History validated the proposed symbols "without inconvenience". The arms were those of the Bejarano lineage, lords of Orellana.

Alvar García Bejarano, erected first lord of Orellana de la Sierra by King Henry II in 1375, was commissioned to re-settle the area. His father was one of thr survivors of the slaughter of the Bejarano lineage ordered in 1289 in Badajoz by Sancho IV.
The tradition says that Alvar built the castle of Orellana on the highest point of the village, close to the parish church. Partially demolished, the castle keeps a stone coat of arms of the Bejarano lineage dated form the late 16th century.
