Club Deportivo Castelló (website) was established in 1922, succeeding on 20 July 1922 Sociedad Deportiva Cervantes Fútbol Club, a club established for young workers with the support of the Republican Center. The club's new name, Castelló Club de Fútbol, was quickly changed to Club Deportivo Castelló.
C.D. Castelló played in the top league from 1942 to 1947, ranking 4th in 1943; since then, the club made only short appearances in the top league (1972-1974, 1981-1982, and 1989-1991).
In 2010, the club was relegated from the second to the third league, and, the next year, to the fourth league. It eventually joined back the third league in 2018 and the second league in 2020.
The club's original flag was lost during the Civil War. In 2013, Asociación Cultural Centenari Albinegre, the association established in 2012 to prepare the celebration of the club's 90th anniversary, offered a white flag with the club's logo in the center and three black ascending diagonal stripes in canton (photo,

The flags are based on the club's jersey, vertically striped white and black (Spanish, albinegra).
The jersey adopted in 1922 had horizontal, green (for the fields), orange (for oranges), and blue (for the sea); since there was no available fabric of these colors, the jersey was left plain white. On 11 October 1925, the white and black colors were adopted for the sake of differentiation from Valencia C.F.; the club also wanted to forget the shameful behavior of its first president, Tadeo Mallech, who sold a match to Valencia C.F. in 1924.
