The municipality of Cártama (24,592 inhabitants in 2015, 10,512 ha; municipal website) is located 20 km north-west of Málaga. The municipality is made of the 11 settlements of Cártama Pueblo, Estación de Cártama, El Sexmo, Sierra de Gibralgalia, Doña Ana, Loma de Cuenca, Estación de Aljaima, Nueva Aljaima, Las Tres Leguas, Los Mondeños, and El Pilarejo.

Cártama was first named by the Phoenicians, as Cartha, lit. the Hidden Town. In 195 BC, the Romans established the municipality of Carthima and protected it by big fortifications. The Muslims increased even more the defences of the town, building a castle and walls; the town was then a main stronghold in the defensive belt protecting Málaga.
Reconquerred from the Moors in 1485 by Ferdinand the Catholic, the town then adopted its current name. Grapevine, a traditional source of income for the town, was substituted by almond trees after the phylloxera crisis.

Symbols of Cártama

The flag of Cártama (photo, photo, photo, photo, photo, photo) is prescribed by Decree No. 81, adopted on 7 May 1986 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 21 May 1986 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 46, p. 1,635 (text). This was confirmed by a Resolution adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Made of two horizontal stripes of equal width, the upper, gold, and the lower, green, charged with the municipal coat of arms.

The coat of arms of Cártama is prescribed by an Order adopted on 11 April 1986 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 29 April 1986 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 36, p. 1,282 (text). This was confirmed by a Resolution adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The coat of arms is described as follows:

Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Argent a Roman column with Corinthian capitals ensigned by a cross of wrought iron proper, 2. Gules a castle or masoned sable port and windows azure. Grafted in base, Or a branch of orange tree and a branch of lemon tree proper in saltire. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed [detailed description skipped].

The first quarter represents the Roman column to which the inhabitants of the town added a cross in 1752.
