Introduction

Planet of the Apes is a TV series, based on the eponymous movie, which was, in turn, based on the novel, eponymous as well.
Eugene Ipavec, 20 July 2005

There is also a new movie (or re-make) about this story made in 2001 by Director Tim Burton. In that movie the apes use some interesting standards and vexilloids.

However you can find an interesting point in the DVD of this movie. This appears in the "extra features" or "making of" section. There is a sub-section of "concept design" used for the movie. One of the points shown there is the one we like: flags. So it is possible to watch several drawings of the design from the first sketches to the final "Vexillology-things" shown on screen in the movie.

Possible ape regime flag

This flag appears in the TV episode "The Gladiators." The production apparently didn't have a lot of money left over for innovative prop design after all those ape costumes, as the flag is very simple; a red field with a black-outline chimpanzee head in profile facing hoistward.

I would say it represents the government of the planet. rather than the planet or one of the ape races, but I'm not sure of it. The flag flew over a civic gladiatorial arena in an ape-governed town. I took it to be that of the simian government, especially since a large version hung from the governor's podium. But there were no references to it in the show, and I've only seen the one episode, so I can't vouch. It could have been the town's flag, or the governor's, though the generic-ness of the design suggests — to me — that it was supposed to represent the ape regime as a whole. I have now seen the flag in another episode as well. I've also found a screenshot from the series that includes the flag, though in the background and out of focus.
