The municipality of Écouflant (4,249 inhabitants in 2018; 1,702 ha) is adjacent (north-east) of Angers. The town is composed of two parts: the historic town to the north, and the district of Éventard to the south, several kilometers away, which developed from the 1970s.
Écouflant is named from its geographical location. The town is bordered on the north-west by the confluence of rivers Loir and Sarthe; south of the municipal territory, the confluence of rivers Mayenne and Sarthe forms the Maine.
A fishing village since the Middle Ages, Écouflant also developed over the centuries hemp cultivation and gravel extraction from the surrounding rivers.
