The municipality of Étretat (1,242 inhabitants in 2018; 407 ha) is located 25 km north of Le Havre.
Étreta is known for its chalk cliffs, including three natural arches and a pointed formation called L'Aiguille (the Needle), which rises 70 metres above the sea. Some of the cliffs are as high as 90 metres. The cliffs and the resort beach attracted artists, such as the painters Eugène Boudin, Gustave Courbet and Claude Monet. Two of the three famous arches are visible from the town, the Porte d'Aval, and the Porte d'Amont, while the Manneporte, the biggest one, cannot be seen from the town.
