The name of Verneuil comes from the Gaul word verno, "an alder". There are more than 230 French toponyms based on verno. The Latin name of the alder, alnus, gave the French modern word aulne but only 57 toponyms, all to be found in the north of the country.
Verneuil is known for its watersports and recreation park, built around ponds made by backwaters of the Seine.
