Presentation of Drama

The municipality of Drama (58,944 inhabitants in 2011; 84,010 ha) is located in eastern Macedonia. The municipality was formed in the 2011 local government reform by the merger of the former municipalities of Drama (58,532 inh.) and Sidironero (Σιδηρόνερο, 412 inh.).

Flag of Drama

The flag of Drama (photo, photo) is white with the municipal emblem, which portrays John III Doukas Vatatzes (1193-1254).

Emperor of Nicaea (1222-1254), John III Doukas Vatatzes usremembered as the "Liberator of Drama and Greater Macedonia" or the "Father of the Greeks".
Allied with Bulgaria against the Latin Empire, John III annexed Salonica and much of Thrace. He expanded Nicaean control over the Aegean and annexed Rhodes. John III prepared the re-establishment of the Byzantine Empire, which was achieved in 1261 by Michael VIII Palaiologos following the seizure of Constantinople and the suppression of the Latin Empire.
