The municipality of Benkovac (11,026 inhabitants in 2011, 2,866 in the town of Benkovac) is located some 15 km inland south-east of Zadar. It was granted the Town status in 1997.
During the Serbian occupation, Benkovac was probably the second biggest town in the separatist Republic of Serbian Krajina. It was liberated in 1995.

The symbols of Benkovac (municipal website) are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Benkovca, published in 1999 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Zadarske županije, No. 1.
The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.
The flag is in proportions 1:2, blue with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.

The coat of arms is "Azure a semi-griffin rampant or issuant from the base holding in the claws a branch vert with three leaves and a lily flower argent".

The ceremonial flag was originally designed as a blue gonfalon ending triangularly with a golden fringe, the coat of arms in the middle, the name of the town above in two arches and oak and vine branches below.
The flag in actual use (photo,

photo) has the coat of arms outlined with the Croatian wattle ornament ribbon,while the same ribbon makes borders all around the flag. The artwork and colouring of the ornaments beneath the coat of arms also differ somewhat.
