Introduction and adaptation of new symbols in Budapest are continuing.
Now, Józsefváros, the 8th district of Budapest adopted new symbols, flag and
coat of arms, as well. Colours of the flag has been kept, but in a new pattern,
upper half of the flag is white charged with new coat of arms, lower part of the
flag is geen with a yellow Latin cross. Both horizontal and vertical variant are
used. Ratios are 2:3 and 1:3, respectively.
They were adopted on 19 March 2012. Green symbolizes the hope, while yellow cross
is for sun rays where the hope comes from. The castle on the coat of arms is the
place (Budapest) where this district is located.

I was in the Office of the Community of Józsefváros
(Budapest VIII). The description is from the Resolution No
13/1996 (III.8.): The coat of arms of Józsefváros is a dark green shield
with pointed bottom divided to four parts by a yellow cross. The
width of the cross is the 1/3 of the shield. In the center of the
shield there is a great "J" letter relates to the name
of the district.
The flag of Józsefváros is a green-gold (yellow) flag
(horizontal), ratio 1:2 and in the first 1/3 is the coat of arms.

Józsefváros is a district of Budapest Capital (VIII.
district from 1873) in Hungary. The district has got 87.696
inhabitants (1990 census), nearly all of them are Hungarians.
Five of the Official Ethnic Minorities in Hungary has ethnic
council in the settlement: Gipsy, German, Romanian, Ruthenian and
Slovakian. Neighbouring settlements are: Budapest
VI.-Erzsébetváros, Budapest XIV. - Zugló, Budapest X. -
Kőbánya, Budapest IX. - Ferencváros and Budapest V. -
Belváros-Lipótváros. Józsefváros (Josephstadt) was found in
the 18th century as a suburb of Pest City out of the walls. Part
of Pest to 1872 and part of Budapest from 1873 as the VIII.
district.

from the Office of the Community of Józsefváros and based on
the No.13/1996.(III.8.) Resolution modified by the
No.32/1998.(IX.11.) Resolution.

I blieve that the letter "J" stands for
"Józsefváros" of parhaps for "József" only,
refering to the namesake person. Was this also his coat of arms, or was it
created for this district?

The east suburb of Pest City has got was named in 1777 after
the crown prince, son of Queen Marie-Theresie, later King Joseph
II. The first buildings were built in 1730 in the territory of
the district. The coat of arms was created for the district

When I visited the exhibition in the museum, the green coat of arms
with yellow cross and black letter J in the middle was
shown, but no flag above it. However, I have seen the
vertical table flag among the several table flags shown there.
Also saw it on several places in the city. Also, the Flag Museum
is in that district and hoists this flag prominently near the
entrance, as the district gave the rooms for the Museum.
