Located in Kanazawa City Ishikawa Prefecture and established in 1949. The university flag has navy blue with a white emblem in the center (specifications). When the new Kanazawa University was established in 1949, the school emblem was designed by Kamenosuke Morita (then president of Kanazawa College of Art), Yoshinori Mori (then lecturer at Kanazawa College of Art), and Teizo Hano (then president of Ishikawa Prefectural High School of Arts and Crafts) and officially adopted in August 1949. The design is based on the leaves of the acanthus (Japanese name: Haazami), a plant native to the Mediterranean coast, and the kanji word "大學" ＝university. The language of the acanthus flower is "the fine arts. Its elegant leaves were favored by the ancient Greeks and Romans, and were used as decorative patterns on the capitals of Corinthian and composite buildings. It is said to have been planted in the garden of the Academia, the school founded by the philosopher Plato. Since then, the word "Acanthus" has been familiar to students and faculty for many years, used in the name of the university's public relations magazine and in the names of bridges connecting districts on campus.
