It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain green field.

Shield Or with base wavy of Vert and Argent, a spinning wheel Azure, flanked by two torteaux, in chief a goshawk Sable, holding in his claws a cross patty Gules, charged with a Greek cross Argent. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "COVOADA - PONTA DELGADA".
Meaning:
The goshawk is a local symbol of the Açores. The cross is representing the Order the Knights of Christ. The base with green waves is representing the Atlantic Ocean.
