It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of yellow and green.

Shield Vert with base wavy of Argent and Azure, a belfry's top Argent with window Sable and bell Or, flanked by two embowed branches of thorn bush Or. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "ESPINHAL".
Meaning:
The commune's name means something like "thorn hedge", the branches of thorn are thus canting elements.
