About the Flag

It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field gyronny of black and yellow (city rank).

Coat of arms

[Viana do Castelo municipality CoA] image by Sérgio Horta,

The shield is gules, on a sea of three waves, azure and argent (usually it would be vert and argent, for blue stands for rivers, not see…), a gallion or, draped argent and bearing on the main sail a cross of five eschuteons azure, each charged with a saltire of bezants argent. And on a chief azure a castle or (canting arms, as "castelo" means "castle"). Mural crown argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading "CIDADE DE VIANA DO CASTELO" in black upper case letters.

Former Flag reported 1998

The flag was quartered (town rank) black over yellow with the coat of arms centred. The weird thing here is that Viana do Castelo had city rank and thus the coat of arms crown was five-towered, but the flag itself remained quartered, as those of towns

Flag and arms apparently have been in use in 2012
