Merchant Marine Academy Battle Standard

[U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Battle Standard] by Joe McMillan, 15 August 2000

The "battle standard" of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point, New York. This square embroidered color is carried on parade between the S&S and the Academy flag. It commemorates the 142 cadet-midshipmen who gave their lives during World War II. Unlike the armed forces academies, which accelerated their programs to produce additional officers but did not actually send their students into active service before graduation, King's Point students served as junior officers aboard merchant vessels. The 142 who were killed far exceeds the number of cadets or midshipmen who have been killed in the line of duty in the history of all the other state or federal academies combined.
