According to an article published by The Miami Herald on September 9th, 1990,
West Miami's first flag was designed in 1970 by a longtime resident and
community newspaper company owner Morris Harris. It was given to the City
Government as a gift, and flown unofficially throughout the city until the
adoption of a tricolor on September 9th, 1990.
The 1970 flag was replaced
after the final one the city posessed became too delapidated and frayed to
continue service. The tricolor was blue, white, and grey with the old city seal
placed in the middle; a design reccomended by a local flag company to match that
of the city's vehicles and equipment.
Commissioner Rebecca Sosa suggested
the idea of letting schoolchildren design the city's new flag, but this idea
never went anywhere.
The tricolor flag has been replaced as of 2024.
