At the edge of the Ozark Mountain region, Joplin has a current population of 49,024. The daytime population swells to 270,000 while the population within a 40-mile radius of Joplin is 400,000, making it Missouri's fourth largest metropolitan area."

A photograph of the City Council shows Mayor Tupper and his eight Councillors in front of three flags, from left to right, the flag of Missouri, the flag of the USA, and, most probably, the flag of Joplin, red with the municipal seal and some white writing (www.joplinmo.org/council.cfm ). The seal of Joplin can be seen on the website of the Joplin Fire Department (www.joplinmofire.org/employment.cfm). On the flag, the seal is in full colors.

At www.allbusiness.com/government/3608556-1.html, we learn from city clerk Barbara Hogelin that the city seal "was originally established in January 1917, and signifies Joplin's historical mining era, as well as the regional business center it is today. The Seal has been placed on City documents throughout its history". This gives a lower date frame for the flag.
