Description of the flag

Vashon is an island and a census designated place located in King County. It's particularly known for an unusual attraction, which is a bike that is embedded within a pine tree. According to folk tales, a child chained the bike to a tree around the mid 1950s, and over time the tree grew around the bike, causing it to be embedded in it (as seen on the flag).

The flag was designed as part of a flag contest by the Two Wall Gallery. The event was covered by the Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber

If Two Wall Gallery has its way, Vashon will soon be able to wave its very own “official flag.”

Following on last year’s Vashon Flag Competition, the gallery is hosting its second and final flag design competition — with the goal of choosing the Island’s official flag.

Last year, Two Wall garnered 40 entries from 15 people, “and after much disagreement among both the judges and the public, we chose Adria Pontious’ charming design that incorporates the bicycle tree,” according to Greg Wessel, who championed the effort.

“We recognized then that no design captured the majority of the community’s support, and also that many of the designers did not follow the standard design principles for creating a flag, mainly because we didn’t know them ourselves,” he added. “This time, we’re doing it differently.”

The most recent contest to choose an official Vashon flag wrapped up last month at Two Wall Gallery. The design that garnered the most viewer votes was submitted by Adria Magrath, who also won the contest last year.

The most recent contest to choose an official Vashon flag wrapped up last month at Two Wall Gallery. The design that garnered the most viewer votes was submitted by Adria Magrath, who also won the contest last year. Magrath’s flag incorporates a black fir tree with a red bicycle centered on a field of yellow, green and blue bars. Greg Wessel, who organized the competition, said that it is possible that actual flags, emblazoned with the design, might be be manufactured at some point in the near future. No future competitions are planned.

There also seems to be a previous contest from 2010 that didn't result in the flag being official, which has it's own article you can read here: https://www.vashonbeachcomber.com/life/islanders-invited-to-vote-by-e-mail-for-vashon-flag/
