The municipality of Alta Floresta (51,414 inhabitants in 2009; 8,947 sq. km) is located in northern Mato Grosso, 830 km of Cuiabá.

Alta Floresta was founded as a colonization project managed by INDECO ("Integração, Desenvolvimento e Colonização" - Integration, Development and Colonization), a company founded by Ariosto da Riva - known as "The Last Colonist". The building of the town started in 1973 147 km west of km 642 of the new Cuiabá/Santarém road. The building of the town was achieved on 19 May 1976. Alto Foresta was made a District of the Municipality of Aripuanã by Law No. 3,929 of 19 September 1977 and a Municipality by Law No. 4,157 of 18 December 1979. The name of the new town was selected in a public contest held in the schools of Cuiabá.

The flag and arms of Alta Floresta were designed by Lauro Ribeiro Escobar.

The flag is rectangular, yellow with, in the middle, a red triangle charged with the municipal coat of arms. The triangle recalls the geographical location of Alta Floresta and is an emblem of equality and divine perfection. Red represents audacity, courage, valor, strength, intrepidity, nobleness, generosity, honour mercy and magnanimity. Yellow represents the natural resources of Alta Floresta, richness, splendor, glory, nobleness, power, strength, faith, prosperity, and sovereignty.

The coat of arms ("Per fess 1. Gules a lion rampant or flanked by two fleurs-de-lis of the same, 2. Or two fesses wavy azure") includes:
- an Iberian shield, as used in Portugal in the times of development of Brazil, therefore recalling the early colonists of the country;
- a lion rampant or, from the arms of the Nunes family, recalling Antônio Nunes Severo Gomes, founding pioneer of the town; the lion is the heraldic symbol of strength, greatness, courage, magnanimity and vigilance;
- a fleur-de-lys recalling the town's patron saint, the Blessed Virgin;
- the lower part or recalls the natural resources of the soil, while the two waves represent the watercourses, especially rivers Teles Pires and Juruena. Azure stands for justice, beauty, sweetness, nobleness, perseverance, incorruptible firmness, glory, virtue, zeal and loyalty.
- a mural crown as the symbol of political emancipation, argent, with eight towers, only five of them being visible; the gates argent represent hospitality;
- branches of cacao, guarana, coffee and Brazil nut, as important local crops highlighting the soil fertility;
- a scroll with the name of the municipality, the motto "Nada resiste ao trabalho" (Nothing resists work), and the foundation date of the town, 19/05/1976.
By Law No. 250 of 16 May 1991, the municipal motto was changed from Latin (Labori nihil resistet) to Portuguese.
