Shield Azure, St.Michael in armour Argent, standing on a dragon Vert, rising his sword and holding an inescutcheon Argent, charged with a throughout cross Gules, at dexter another inescutcheon Gules, charged with a sword Argent and a key Argent in saltire.
Meaning:
A city seal from 1395 displayed St. Peter and St. Paul, the patron saints of the Bishopric of Naumburg. St. Michael, the patron saint of Zeitz was displayed first on a city seal from 1476. The image of the archangel later on changed often, so did the patterns of both inescutcheons. The sinister inescutcheon acc. to Ralf Hartemink is charged with the cross of St. Michael. The current version looks like a St. George cross. Before it had been depicted as a red cross patty, sometimes impending, sometimes throughout, or as a black impending cross patty in a golden inescutcheon. The dexter inescutcheon displays the arms of the Bishopric of Naumburg, of former Zeitz County (see: German WIKIPEDIA) and the arms of Naumburg City in counterchanged colours as well. Its colours and the order of the charges also changed various times.
