Description of coat of arms:
In a golden (=yellow) shield is a red, statant lion crowned, armed and tongued golden (=yellow). The lion is placed vertically.
Meaning:
According to source the borough gained city rights already in 1380, granted by Lord Johann of Diepholz. Nevertheless the existence of the pattern can be proven first on seals in 1461. The vertical placement of the lion is not clear, perhaps to distinguish from the arms of the Diepholz kin, who had the title of a count since 1531. Also doubtful is the original colour of the coronet.
