Coat of Arms

[Sontra city coa] image by Klaus-Michael Schneider, 4 June 2017

Shield Or, a heraldic rose Azure barbed Vert, superimposed by a lion rampant barry of eight of Argent and Gules armed Or.
Meaning:
Sontra gained the rights of a market town in 1368. The oldest known seal from 1516 displays the lion of Hessen in a hexafoil, later in a quatrefoil. In the seal from 1610 the lion was placed onto a rose. This combination was already used previously, as the arms also appear in the armourial of Siebmacher (1605). Probably it already had appeared among a coat of arms in Rotenburg Castle in 1577. The current choice of tinctures was first painted by Otto Hupp.
