Salem Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, a bend chequered of Gules and Argent, issuant from base a crozier Or in pale, fixed on the crozier a scarf Argent (Latin: panisellus).
Meaning:
The so called Cistercian bend and the crozier with scarf are all alluding to Cistercian Monastery of Salem, established in 1137. It became the rank of an Imperial Abbey before 1178, when it had been upgraded by Pope Alexander III and had been then under direct rule of the Holy See. In 1595 it gained the diocesan chancery of all Cistercian monasteries in southern Germany. It suffered heavily under the 30-Years-War (1618 - 1648) and was partially destroyed by fire 1697. Finally it was secularised in 1803 and became a possession of the Margraviate of Baden.

Flag and arms were approved by Minister of Interior of Baden-Württemberg on 18 June 1971, published in GABl 576/1972. Neufrach was incorporated into Salem on 1 April 1972.
