Description of coat of arms:
In a silver (= white) shield is a red eagle armed and tongued golden (=yellow).
Meaning:
The red eagle, in this case a version without cloverstems, is that one of the margraves of Brandenburg. They gained Stargard from the dukes of Pomerania in 1236. The margraves erected a fortified castle between 1248 and 1271 in order to protect the crossroads from Hamburg to Pomerania and from Lychen to the Baltiv shores. Protected by the fortification next to the Slavic settlement of Stargard (=old town ?) there arose a German sttlement, which gained city rights in 1259 from i>Margrave Otto III. of Brandenburg. Already in 1300 the region became a possession of the Dukes of Mecklenburg, who were temporarily residing here from 1352 to 1603.
