Description of current flag:
The flag's ratio is 3:5. It is a red over yellow over red horizontal triband with ratio 1:4:1. The coat of arms without shield is in the centre of the yellow stripe.

Description of flag of Plau (1989 - 1994):
It was a blue over yellow over red horizontal bicolour. The coat of arms was in the centre of the flag.
This flag was used inofficially. As it was not approved, it was abolished in 1994. The city was renamed into Plau am See also in 1994.

Description of coat of arms:
In a golden (= yellow) field is a red gate masoned black upon a basement of the same kind. The gate is embattled by five pinnacles and has bays on either side. In the open gate is a black bull's head crowned golden (=yellow). The crown has pearls and fleur de lis as ornaments.
Meaning:
The ensemble of the crowned bull's head is called Richenbergian bull's head.

The current flag was approved by minister of interior of Mecklenburg-Westpomerania on 28 May 1996.

The flag's ratio is 3:5. It is a yellow over red horizontal bicolour. The coat of arms is in the centre of the flag.

Description of coat of arms:
The chief is plain blue. In the yellow field is a red building with a stepped gable. In its open (=yellow) door is a red Latin cross.
Meaning:
The blue chief is symbolizing the location on the northern bend of Lake Plau. The building is an image of the church of Karow that had been erected in 1872.

The flag was approved by minister of interior of Mecklenburg-Westpomerania on 27 January 2004, published in the roll of arms of Mecklenburg-Westpomerania as no. 0277, the coat of arms on 28 March 2003. The symbols became invalid on 1 January 2011.
