The municipality of Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne (11,805 inhabitants in 2018; 2,80 ha) was established on 1 January 2019 as thr merger of the former municipalities of Château-Gontier (seat), Azé, and Saint-Fort.

Château-Gontier was built in the 11th century to defend and control an obligatory crossing of river Mayenne located on the borders of Anjou, Maine and Brittany. The town was built on the heights of the river's right bank, near the fortified castle erected around 1007 by Count of Anjou Fulk III the Black. From the 12th century, the "faubourg" developed on the left bank.
The flag of Château-Gontier (photos) was white with a stylized representation of the municipal arms, "Azure a castle argent flanked by embattled roofed towers of the same windows and masonned sable a chief gules two keys argent", and the name of the municipality below.
