The municipality of Montchanin (4,963 inhabitants in 2018; 782 ha) is located between Le Creusot and Montceau-les-Mines.
The municipality was created in 1854 by separation from Saint-Eusèbe. Its original name, Montchanin-les-Mines, was shortened to Montchanin in 1958.
From 1857 to 1968, benefiting from the massive presence of coal and
clay, and from the Canal du Centre and developed rail and road networks, Montchanin was the seat of one of the most important tile factories in France, developed by Charles Avril (1817-1891).
