In the year of 1987, during the administration of José Domínguez of the State Congressional Legislature, a call for coat of arms proposals was launched, directed towards all municipalities without their own coat of arms. Various proposals were submitted for the municipality; that of Leopoldo Horacio Chávez Valenzuela was chosen to be the municipal coat of arms around the same time. Description according to Héraldica Municipal de Chihuahua:
Resolved on Spanish field, the bordure is of gold and carries in its upper part the name Paquime and the year 1565 in which the conquistadors stayed in this pre-Colombian City, and in its base "Casas Grandes" both legends in sable (color black). The principal Blazon is the indigenous cross, known as the Cross of Paquime, whose mysticism and symbolism remembers the 4 basic deities of life: water, land, sun, and air, and likewise represents the 4 suns: that of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The further blazons which are integrated into the shield are: the Cross of Saint James, and fleur-de-lis, the first makes reference to the order of Santiago, the second refers to the nobility and honor of the inhabitants of Casas Grandes. Agriculture, cattle-raising, and silviculture are represented respectively by an ear of wheat, a head of bovine cattle, and a group of pine trees, fruticulture is represented by an apple, peach, and a pear.
