The coat of arms was designed by the architect Humberto Murillo Lozano, being approved by the council on 27 June 1989. Description according to Héraldica Municipal de Chihuahua:
It is crowned by a ribbon carrying the original name of this municipality: San Nicolás de Carretas, it is resolved in Spanish field, the same of which is chopped and sliced forming 4 sections, in the first appears the Franciscan symbol (the 5 sores of Christ) since the Franciscans evangelized this region, the second section is occupied by a cloud in clear reference to the hope in the water of rain, the third section composes a head of bovine livestock representing Cattle-raising, in the fourth section goes the Temple of San Nicolás de Carretas representing the Catholic religion; in the center of the shield appears the bull ring of this community, the same of which is very antique (the third of America), 4 wagons [carretas] in diagonal reminds us of the original name of this Municipality which was a transfer station for the people that went or came from the mountains. The year of 1864 makes reference to the foundation of the mission of San Nicolás de Carretas.
Serving as a wreath are two branches of, presumably, alligator juniper; these same ones serve as divisions for the inner sections. At the top of the bordure, it reads
"GRAN MORELOS CHIHUAHUA", withthe code 08 to the left for the state and 026 to the right for the municipality; these are codes used for statistical purposes by INEGI.
