    Coat of Arms

The coat of arms of the municipality was designed by Mexican-American graphic designer José "Joe" Vera López. Although there is conflicting information, it is believed to have been designed in 1973 for a contest held by the tourism-development organization of the government INFRATUR (now FONATUR), and it started its use by 1974. Originally it was intended as a tourism logo, but by 1978, after the inception of Benito Juárez Municipality in 1975, the logo began to be used as the municipal coat of arms. However, it was not until the tenure of Municipal President Francisco Alor Quesada (2005-2008) that it was approved officially in 2006 and acknowledged as the official municipal coat of arms.

The Benito Juárez coat of arms is designed to be simple, as it was originally a tourism logo. The circle is hollow to evoke the hoop of the Mayan ball game and the sun. Red is a reminder of the bright sun at dawn and bears the sun's rays. Yellow depicts the sands of the beaches, while blue depicts the waves of the clear blue ocean. An illustration of what it represents can be seen here.
