Floriade (Netherlands)

[KPMG flag] Crawford Van Horne, 17 Oct 2012

The first Floriade was organized in 1960 in Rotterdam by the Dutch Horticulture Council. The Floriade has been organized since then every ten years in a Dutch town:

  • 1972 Amsterdam
  • 1982 Amsterdam
  • 1992 Zoetermeer
  • 2002 Haarlemmeermeer
  • 2012 Venlo
  • 2022 Almere
The Floriades are officially recognized as World Horticulture Expositions by the International Association of Horticultural Producers and by the Bureau of International Expositions.

This is a flag of the Floriade 2012, organised in Venlo. I'm not sure which is which, but a somewhat different version can be seen at http://omroepzuidplas.nl/artikel/2012/9/24/geen-floriade-2022-zuid-holland. The Floriade 2012 was open from 4 April to 7 October. When it closed, a flag of the Nationale Tuinbouwraad was passed on to representatives of the Almere, the city where the Floriade 2022 will be organised. This is different from 2002, when flags - I don't know of what kind - were passed on to representatives of Rostock, the IGA Rostock 2003 being the next international horticulture exposition.

At least one of the four candidates for the Floriade 2022 even had its own bid-flag: Holland Central's flag can be seen at http://www.lansingerland.nl/internet/nieuws_264/item/lansingerland-zet-floriade-2022-in-de-top_42139.html>.

I'd say that some of the earlier Floriades had flags as well, but I can't recall the details.
