It is a quite typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a white and red quarterly (town rank) background.

The arms are Or on a mound Proper issuant from the base and charged with a fess wavy Argent itself charged with a fess wavy Azure a castle Gules with port and windows Argent charged on its central tower with a Maltese cross Argent between two olive branches Vert fruited Or. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA DO CRATO"

In the arms of the municipality and in the arms of most local communes is a Maltese cross. It is symbolizing the Order of Malta, also known as Order of St. John, which erected in the area of the Crato municipality a priory, which owned 23 commanderies, among those in the following places: Crato, Gáfete, Tolosa, Amieira, Gavião, Belver, Envendos, Carvoeiro, Sertã, Oleiros, Pedrógão Pequeno, Proença-a-Nova, Cardigos and Álvaro.

Crato municipality had 4348 inhabitants in 2001, and it consists of 4 communes, covering 388,03 km². It is part of Portalegre District, traditional province and NUTS III Alto Alentejo, 1999 ref. adm. region and C.C.R. / NUTS II Alentejo.
