Tawazun Council is the defense and security acquisitions authority for the UAE Armed Forces
and Abu Dhabi Police since 2021 and since 2002 in charge of defense
technology, innovation and research and
development, as well as standard and quality assurance together with setting
regulations, standards and governance.
It was established in 1992 originally
as UAE Offsets Group. It was rebranded
as Tawazun Economic Council in 2007. On December 2, 2014 it was consolidated
as a merger of 11 defence companies that were subsidiaries of Mubadala
Development Company with another investment firm being established later as
Mubadala Investment Company, Tawazun Holding
(established in 2007), and Emirates Advanced Invest (EAI) Group under Emirates Defence
Industries Company, EDIC.
These companies
were:
- Barij Dynamics (a joint venture with South African company Denel
Dynamics, formerly known as Tawazun Dynamics and currently denominated al-Tariq
- Tawazun Precision industries
- Asmak and Waha Capital
(established in 2000)
- Dolphin Energy (established in 1999)
- Al Dar
Properties (established in 2000)
- Barij Munitions
- Caracal
International
- NIMR Automotive LLC (established in 2000)
On November
5, 2019 they were then rearranged as part of Edge Group with more than 25 entities into five core clusters:
Platforms & Systems, Missiles & Weapons, Space & Cyber Technologies, Trading
& Mission Support, and Homeland Security, to be rebranded again in 2022 to
its original denomination.
On January 12, 2024 it announced the
acquisition of the Emirates Classification Society "TASNEEF" and its subsidiaries.
