Description

According to Baert 2001, in June 1928 Aminullah came back from a trip to Europe, decided to speed up his reforms and prescribed a new flag design. The new flag was vertically divided black-red-green with an emblem in the middle of the red stripe. Black stood for past, red for blood shed for independence, and green for hope in the future.

The emblem showed the sun rising above snowy mountains, symbolizing a new era for the Kingdom, surrounded by a wreath of wheat spikes and surmounted with a yellow star. On the white scroll linking the wheat spikes was written Allah and Muhammed.

The image in Baert 2001 is very similar to the one above, Baert 2001 shows a red star with a yellow fimbriation. The dates are slightly different, Baert 2001 gives June 1928-January 1929 whereas we give September 1928-January 1929.

Wikipedia has this flag: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Afghanistan_July_1928-September_1928.svg. I asked the uploader about his source, because I did not find the image nor here nor at other vexillological websites. The uploader, Fornax, sent me an eMail with two cards from the Flag Research Institute. In fact, it seems to be an important one, because it introduced the colors black-red-green.
