Ivan Sache, 22 Jan 2014
The flag of Bahia Blanca was the subject of the contest "Confección de
la Bandera del Partido de Bahía Blanca" (Design of the flag of the
municipality of Bahia Blanca"), organized by the municipal
administration. Initiated by the Municipal Councillor Fabio
Pierdominici, the contest was open from 1 October to 30 November 2012
to the alumni of the public and private, primary and secondary schools
of the town.
The first prize was awarded to Pablo Martínez Haller (10-years old,
5th grade, Escuela 4 "Bartolomé Mitre"), among 20 proposals selected
for the final round of evaluation.
The flag has two horizontal stripes, blue and green, symbolizing the
sky and the plain, respectively. It is charged with different emblems,
such as an anchor*, a gear, and the silhouette of the "Fortaleza
Protectora Argentina"**. The two horizontal fields are separated by a
"guarda pampa"***, characteristic of the natives' art. The emblems
recall the cultural and economical wealth of the town, as the product
of history, the force and work of its inhabitants for its 184 years of
lifespan, as well as the native peoples.
The final design shall be polished by the designer Juan Luis
Sabattini, who will address specifically the details of the anchor and
the specification of the colours of the bay and of the sky. The design
will be eventually submitted to a vexillological revision by the
expert Salvador Navas.
The flag was unveiled on 11 April 2013, during the celebration of the 185th anniversary of the foundation of the town.
