The municipality of Esquina (26,399 inhabitants) is located on river Paraná,
here the border with the Santa Fe Province, 330 km south of Corrientes.
Esquina was established on a plot offered by the postmaster Benito Lamela, who
erected a chapel dedicated to St. Rita. The village was destroyed in 1839 by the
Entre Rios army after the battle of Palo Largo, In 1842, Garibaldi's troops
withdrew to Esquina after the battle of Costa Brava, fought 30 km southwards.
Esquina was rebuilt in 1876 north-west of its original location; Esquina was one
of the most important river ports in the province in the late 19th century -
early 20th century.
Esquina is home of the Pacú National Festival. Pacu (Piaractus
mesopotamicus (Holmberg, 1887)) is a fish native to the Paraguay-Paraná
basin.

The flag of
Esquina is vertically divided white-blue-green. The white stripe is charged with
a pink flower and forms a triangle spreading until the center of the flag
through the blue stripe.
The flag emphasizes the social feelings of the
citizens of Esquina.
The white stripe shows in a simple way the transparent
behaviour of the people of Esquina. The heraldic charge is the flower of the
tree locally known as lapacho*, in its pink variety, highlighting the permanent;
cordial union of the people of Esquina with the other settlers of the Corrientes
Province, the tree being autochthonous to the area. The flower represents the
renovation of purity every spring, succeeding the harsh winter and prefiguring
the warm summer.
The blue stripe represents water of rivers Paraná and
Corrientes, which, together with other local watercourses, attenuate the warm
summer.
The green stripe represents Mother Nature, present everyday in
Esquina and renovating its most intense colours in spring and summer, as well as
friendship and the behaviour of the town of Esquina.
*The pink lapacho,
aka pink ipę or pink trumpet tree, Handroanthus impetiginosus
(Mart. ex DC.) Mattos), is native to Central and South America.
The
process of flag adoption was initiated in 2014 by Resolution No. 309, which
appointed a commission in charge of the process, the coordination being assigned
to the Directorate of Culture of the municipality. The commission was allowed to
establish the rules of the contest "Tu bandera, mi bandera" (Your flag, my flag)
by Resolution No. 320, adopted in 2014, too. Announced on 22 October 2014, the
contest yielded 23 proposals, which were assessed on 26 November 2014 by the
jury; the winning design was submitted by "Junco", the Directorate of Youth of
the municipality. The idea of the design is credited to Valerio Traverso,
20-years old.
The flag was eventually adopted by Ordinance No. 5, adopted in
2016.

The flag is represented in
proportions 1:2 in the municipal website, while the drawing unveiled during the
proclamation of the results is in proportions 2:3.
