The municipality of Mina Clavero (9,328 inhabitants in 2012) is located in
the Traslasierra valley, north-western Córdoba Province.
Mina Clavero was
originally inhabited by a Comechigon clan led by cacique Milan Navira. After
surveys led by the Spanish mining engineer Hernando Romero, mines were
inaugurated in 1898 north of Mina Clavero, which boosted the development of the
region. The population of El Tránsito (today, Cura Brochero) started to
increase, while the healing properties of the water of river Mina Clavero
attracted the first tourists in the area.
Advised by José Gabriel Brochero,
the parish priest of El Tránsito, Anastasia Favre de Merlo (1859-1946) and her
husband, Manuel Merlo, established Hotel Merlo. This was the starting point of
the development of Mina Clavero, which was incorporated as a municipality on 1
May 1928.
Law No. 26,030, adopted on 4 May 2005 by the National Congress,
established Mina Clavero as the National Capital of Rally. This was a tribute to
the local hero, the rally driver Jorge Recalde (1951-2001); known as the
Traslasierra Condor, Recalde won in 1988 the Rally Argentina, being until now
the only Argentine to have won a WRC round.

The flag of Mina Clavero was selected on 3 October
among 19 proposals.
Submitted by Escuela Especial María Silvina Casañas de
Recalde, the flag is horizontally divided brown-white-blue, charged in the
center with a yellow sun.
The brown color predominates in the mountain
landscape characteristic of the town, which is surrounded by the Sierras Grandes
("Big Mountains").
The white color evokes the purity of the air.
The blue
color represents the pure and crystalline water that gushes forth from natural
sources and contributes to the topography of the town (river Mina Clavero and
its geological features).
The sun represents both the Sun of May, featured on
the national flag, and the Jesuit sun, featured on the provincial flag, which
shines over the horizon, enlightening every settler and inhabitant of Mina
Clavero.
The flag shall be inaugurated on 11 October 2018, the town's
day. Since there is no historical record of the town's foundation, 11 October
was selected as the day Anastasia Favre de Merlo passed away (11 October 1946).
