The Hinchbrook community of Halifax now has a flag to call its own. The design was chosen from a recent competition and a special community celebration will be held tomorrow where the flag will be raised. Pam Griffin from the Halifax Progress and Tourism Association says residents are very proud of their town, and it was important to find the right flag design.

Halifax is a town in Hinchinbrook Shire, which is on the North Queensland coast between Cairns and Townsville. The town is on the Herbert River, just south of the the Hinchinbrook Channel and Hinchinbrook Island, and northwest of Halifax Bay.

Pam Griffin described the stripes as being the colours of all the flags of the world, like the people of Halifax. She listed, seemingly from top, blue, red, white, green, orange, yellow, black. The last two stripes appear to be ochre and another blue. Above and below these nine stripes are stripes of white or a very pale colour.

In the upper centre of the flag is a black mango tree on white within a thin black ring. The mango tree represents the town and its people, the trunk being the town and the branches the people from all sorts of places. As noted in the interview, mangos are an important industry in the area.

Below the tree is a black band bearing "HALIFAX" in white bold sans serif, followed by something much smaller, possibly "NQ".
