The coat of arms is prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i načinu upotebe grba Općine Novi grad Sarajevo (text), adopted on 12 February 2001 by the Municipal Assembly and published on 7 March 2001 in the Canton official gazette Službene novin Kantona Sarajevo, No. 5.

The coat of arms, of modern design, can be blazoned as "Per chevron twice angled azure and argent and overall issuant from the base a dome with a pointed tower or between four (two and two) piles inverted also or".
The Decision states that the colors are those from the national flag of Bosnia and Hezegovina. The arms depict a stylized urban settlement, a mosque, a church and a dome. It is further explained that it symbolizes the growth of the living standards and spatial expansion, the mosque and the church as symbols of multiethnicity, the dome as symbol of culture, sports and arts and finally the sun as the source of life, birth and youth.
