Although official political parties are illegal in Bahrain, the government authorizes political societies and associations. Examples of Pro-governmental societies include: The Al-Asalah Islamic Society, Sunni Salafist political party in Bahrain, Minbar (Sunni Muslim Brothers), the al Mustaqbal coalition; examples of oppositional forces include al-Wifaq (Shia), Democratic Action and Haq (Shia).

The Al-Asalah Islamic Society is the main Sunni Salafist political party in Bahrain. It favors a
hard-line interpretation of Islam which rejects much of Bahrain's modernism. On the issue of women's political rights, the party disagrees with them having any, and encourages strict religious observance.

The Al-Menber National Islamic Society is the political wing of the Sunni Islamist Al Eslah Society in Bahrain and Bahrain's branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. It promotes a conservative social agenda while not directly challenging the Kingdom's government. It became a political society in 2006.
